Lewis Jamieson who is a current third year Vehicle Paint Re-finishing apprentice has found a lot of qualities within apprenticeships.
"Being a bit older I never thought I would get the opportunity to complete an apprenticeship. I have really benefited from the opportunity, the help and the guidance. It's been really good going away for one week blocks, which was a great duration for being away. Perth College was a lovely place and I also managed to complete higher maths and IT whilst doing my apprenticeship. I feel a lot more confident that my work is up to the highest standard expected by my employer. I particularily enjoy the variety offered by my employment, which includes shot blasting, powder coating and panel beating. A lot of my colleagues on the course were just spraying cars all day so I was actually allowed to help coach some of the younger students during my block. Having now completed and passed my final exams with either merit or distinction and won the Perth College Motoring Trade Apprentice of the year award, I'm really excited to finish my apprenticeship and get back to the workshop, where we have just put in a new spraybooth and will be doing more bodyshop works."
Claire Christey, the Contracts and Operations Manager at Malakoff Limited, also finds the apprenticeship programme immensely positive for both employers and employees.
"Modern Apprenticeships are an excellent tool for employers to develop the next generation of tradesmen and tradeswomen, the blend of formal learning and work place experience over 4 years gives us as an employer a great opportunity to train our apprentices to the high standards we require. Developing skills inhouse is especially important in an Island economy where it is crucial to keep skills in place for the next generations and to continue to provide our clients with the highest calibre of skilled operatives. We are extremely proud of our apprentices and have a long tradition of training skilled tradesman and women, the job security offered means a number of employees have served their entire career at the Malakoff."
